Shock: 104-Year-Old Woman Says Popular Soda drink Granted Her Long Life

Lauren Freeman

We all love stories of old people attributing their long life to something strange. Theresa Rowley, 104, from Grand Rapids, Michigan, had her birthday on January 1st and she says it's all due to her drinking Diet Coke every day. "I drink it because I like it," she told the press. "I'm going shopping Wednesday, and I need more Diet Coke. I have a bag full of empty Diet Coke cans that I need to return to buy more Diet Coke."

"When I was 100, I thought I'd never be 104," she told the press. "Then I turn 101, and nothing happens... Here I am 104, and still nothing happens."

Diet Coke was launched in 1982, when Theresa would have been 36. However, experts would disagree that the drink is the thing that granted her long years. The so-called diet drinks could cause people to put on weight and even get diabetes.

These products confuse the body since there's nothing natural in them: the mismatch between the sweetness and the low-calorie content just sends your metabolism haywire. Sweetness usually signifies energy (in those carbohydrates), so the body expects more calories. However, it doesn't get them.
